In the beginning…

The Rev. Bob Carter, the Rt. Rev. Harry Shipps, and the Rev. Henry Louttitt

As we prepare for the celebration of the 40th anniversary of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, we’ve been running across a treasure trove of old photographs of the beginnings of the church. The Rev. Bob Carter served as the first vicar for St. Barnabas from 1982-1985. The Rev. Henry Louttitt (who would become the 9th Bishop of Georgia) was the rector of Christ Church Valdosta, the mother church which launched St. Barnabas as a ministry to those living on the north end of the city. Here they are at a groundbreaking ceremony on March 18, 1984, when construction began on our present site at 3565 Bemiss Road.

Construction of the present-day St. Barnabas Episcopal Church

Mr. Blake Ellis was the architect for the building. Construction was completed by the fall, and the first Eucharist was held in the new building on November 18, 1984. Read more of our history HERE.
